Recently we have begun to understand the effects of light, particularly blue and red light, which has shed light on their impact on our circadian rhythms.

Blue Light's Disruptive Effects

Blue light is abundant in natural sunlight as well as being emitted by electronic devices and energy-efficient lighting (LED bulbs). During the day, exposure to blue light is helpful to boost alertness and cognitive performance. However, in the early morning before sunrise and during the evening, excessive blue light exposure can cause health issues and impede the production of melatonin, a hormone that signals the body to prepare for sleep. This leads to difficulties falling asleep and disrupted sleep patterns.

What can I do?

Limit Evening Screen Time: Minimize the use of electronic devices 📱 at least an hour before bedtime to reduce exposure to blue light that can interfere with melatonin production. If you must be on your devices, use blue light filters.

Use Blue Light Filters: Many devices 💻 and apps offer blue light filtering settings that reduce the emission of blue light during the early morning or evening hours. Using these filters helps prepare the body for sleep. You can also purchase glasses 👓 to wear in the morning before sunrise 🌅 or after sunset that block blue light.

Choose Warm Lighting: Use warm and dim lighting in the early morning and in the evening. Incandescent or amber-colored bulbs 💡 emit less blue light, and also create a more conducive environment for winding down.

Red Light can help!

On the other end of the light spectrum, red light has shown interesting effects on circadian rhythms. DMSO is a solvent, a colorless liquid that can dissolve a solute to make a solution. It can penetrate skin and other tissue and carry medication where it’s needed. It is sold in two forms, pharmaceutical and industrial grade.

DMSO is well known by veterinarians for the treatment of injuries and disease in horses. Tractor Supply carries DMSO for this purpose. It is popular for the treatment of brain and spinal cord inflammation, bacterial blood infections, and a foot disease called laminitis. It can be taken orally, intravenously, and topically.

Sixty Minutes introduced DMSO to an American audience during a segment back in 1980. It was during this airing that the work of Dr. Stanley Jacob, Associate professor of Surgery at University of Oregon, was highlighted. Dr. Jacob had spent the previous fifteen years understanding and experimenting with the healing properties of DMSO and even opening his own clinic where he treated people with ailments ranging from chronic pain to spinal cord injuries.

There is much to learn about DMSO and its healing benefits along with the FDA’s relentless campaign to demonize it. I’ve had the opportunity to utilize DMSO in several ways and have shared this healing agent with family and friends. I’ve seen amazing results along the way! I suffer from cold sores, and anytime I start to feel a tingle on my lip I immediately apply DMSO gel with a Q-Tip. I repeat this process every few hours until I no longer feel the tingle. The key here is to treat the cold sore early. I never go on a trip without it in my medicine bag. I’ve also used DMSO mixed with arnica oil and aloe vera on bruises and sprains. It has an amazing positive effect on swelling and pain and shortens the healing time. I’ve witnessed it helping several people with arthritis pain and other joint pain.

There are other uses that I have yet to experience firsthand, but DMSO has been known to help with burns, headaches, head trauma, glaucoma, hair growth, and even spinal cord injuries.

Despite these known benefits the FDA has only approved the use of DMSO to treat one illness, a bladder disease called interstitial cystitis. It is also approved to be used to preserve organs before transplant surgery and preserve stem cells. According to Dr. Jacob, a large pharmaceutical executive told him, “I don’t care if DMSO is the major drug of our century, and we all know it is, it isn’t worth it to us.”

It is important to understand that whatever you mix with the DMSO will be transdermally carried with it. You want to make sure your hands are clean and the skin area you apply it to are also clear of any dangerous chemicals. DMSO should also be diluted when applied to the skin as it can cause a burning sensation and mild irritation. Aloe vera is a good choice to dilute the liquid. Again, I highly recommend reading Dr. Vollmer’s book before utilizing DMSO. Her book is easy to read and provides you with the necessary information to know before getting started and with many easy recipes for therapeutic use.

You can purchase DMSO as a liquid and a gel. THAT is the moment when our family starts our “prevention protocol!” At our house, we have a few little things we do to PREVENT that sickness from even starting!!

First make sure you are eating a healthy diet. Only eat REAL food! We try to limit processed foods, as will as eliminating any sugar from our diet.

At the time you FIRST feel that scratchiness in your throat, try this:

Gargle with a few drops of a protective blend of essential oils mixed in about a teaspoon of water. We use doTERRA’s OnGuard blend oil. We gargle with this mixture every few hours. This blend of oil contains orange peel, clove bud, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus leaf and rosemary leaf oils. Sometimes just gargling every few hours throughout the day is enough to help us feel better. It also tends to numb your throat a little, so you may actually feel immediate relief.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) “shots” - My husband gets these down a lot easier than I do! We will take about a tablespoon of ACV and mix it with a little water and down the hatch it goes.

High Dose Vitamin C - We use Sufficient-C powder. Take 1-2 scoops daily. This brand has a wonderful taste and is easy to tolerate, but any buffered Vitamin C would be helpful.

Elderberry - We make our own elderberry syrup. It is very easy to make and the kids love it. You can also buy elderberry products at your nearest drug store or at stores like Whole Foods or Sprouts.

Zinc - Even zinc lozenges are helpful!

Garlic - If you can't tolerate eating a clove of fresh garlic, you can buy Super Odorless Garlic capsules. These are a little easier on the palate.

Vitamin D3 - Most people have very low levels of Vit D in their bloodstream and can stand to take extra vitamin D3, especially when they are sick! We load up on this vitamin when we start to feel sickness coming on.

Colloidal Silver

These are just some of the products that we use to help fight sickness. We rarely ever get sick, but when we feel sickness coming on, this protocol does the trick most of the time! I would highly suggest stocking up on these products now, bit by bit, so that the cost does not overwhelm you all at once when you finally do need them! Take care and stay healthy!
